Moving Cubic Feet Chart: What the Published Cube Sheets Actually Say

Cubic feet per item, transcribed by machine from 10 published sources, 7 of them US moving forms. Every value keeps the sheet it came from. Where the sheets disagree, both numbers are shown rather than averaged.

    By Published

Read the scope before using a number. This chart covers 67 items drawn from 264 published values across 10 sources. There is no bathroom section, because no published cube sheet carries one.

Sources in green are US moving forms and are what the counts use. The greyed ones are a marketing aggregator and a British self-storage form: still shown, deliberately not counted. Of the 60 items two or more moving forms both carry, 41 agree and 19 do not, and 4 of the 7 forms are reprints of one document. The method and the limits are in the cube sheet comparison study.

Cube here is trade convention, the number an estimator writes on a cube sheet. It is not length times width times height divided by 1728. This study measured nothing, so it takes no position on which of the two is closer to a real truck.

Using these numbers on a real job

A chart gets an estimator to a defensible starting number. It does not tell anyone what is actually in the house, and that is where the money is lost: a cube number applied to the wrong item list is wrong no matter how well sourced the table is.

That is the case for surveying the home instead of guessing from a bedroom count. A customer films a walkthrough, the AI recognizes the items, the volumes come from industry tables like these, and the mover reviews the inventory before the quote goes out. The mechanism is described in virtual survey software for movers, and the estimate side is in moving estimate accuracy.

Book a demo to see an inventory get built from a walkthrough, or read the study behind this chart.

    Common lookups

How many cubic feet is a couch?

A three cushion sofa is 50 cubic feet on both moving forms that carry it. A loveseat is 35 cubic feet, a four cushion sofa or hide-a-bed 60, and a sectional is priced per section at 30.

How many cubic feet is a bed?

Bed including springs and mattress: a double is 60 cubic feet, a queen 65, and a king 70 cubic feet on all 3 moving forms that carry it. Outside that set, a marketing aggregator puts it at 85. Bunk beds as a set of two run 70.

How many cubic feet is a washer and dryer?

A washing machine is 25 cubic feet on all 6 moving forms that carry it. Outside that set, a British self-storage form puts it at 30. That is the cleanest agreement in the whole comparison. A dryer is 20 to 25 cubic feet and a dishwasher 20 cubic feet on all 4 moving forms that carry it. Outside that set, a British self-storage form puts it at 30.

How many cubic feet is a dresser?

A single dresser is 30 cubic feet, a double 40, and a triple 50. A nightstand is 5 cubic feet on all 4 moving forms that carry it. Outside that set, a British self-storage form puts it at 10.

How do you calculate cubic feet for a move?

You do not calculate it item by item. The trade convention is to read each item off a cube sheet and add the lines, then apply the crew’s allowance for packing and boxes. Measuring an item and dividing by 1728 gives a different number, because a cube-sheet value covers the space the item takes on a truck rather than the shape of the item itself. This study did not measure anything, so it takes no position on which is closer to a real truck.

    Are moving cube sheets accurate?

They agree with each other less often than most estimators expect, and the reason is provenance. 4 of the 7 moving forms compared are reprints of the same trade form, so the apparent consensus is mostly one document copied. Inside that family 79% of shared lines match; across independent sources only 54% of items have every source landing on the same number. Of 60 items carried by two or more sheets, 41 agree and 19 do not.

Values collected 2026-08-15. Chart published 2026-08-15.
